Province of Saxony Place Name Indexes. Identifying Place names Using Alphabetical and Reverse Alphabetical Indexes. By Roger P. Minert. Orting, WA: Family Roots Publishing Co. 2015 reprint of book originally published by GRT Publications in 2003. 80 pages. Softcover.
Every researcher has known the frustration or eventually will: you can read every letter in the town’s name except the first letter. This begins the process of guessing what the first letter or syllable is. This book is designed to help researchers who have a partial name of a town, but not the name of the whole town.
The book consists of three parts:
1) This book provides a brief historical background on the Province of Saxony.
2) a listing of all known cities and towns in the Province of Saxony around the time of the establishment of the German Empire in 1870
3) a reverse alphabetical index designed to allow the researcher to work from the end of the place name toward the beginning to form the correct name, to test a theoretical spelling, or a least to formulate "candidate" names for further investigation.
Extremely important when the first letters of the name are missing or illegible.
