MAP OF ILLINOIS

1838 ?

This hand colored map was engraved by Jeremiah Greenleaf of Vermont and taken from Greenleaf's A New Universal Atlas; Comprising Separate Maps of All the Principal Empires, Kingdoms, & States Throughout the World and Forming a Distinct Atlas of the United States...A New Edition Revised and Corrected to the Present Time printed in Boston in 1848 by S. N. Dickinson. The original size of this map was 12 5/8" x 10 3/4" but this reprint was slightly modified to accommodate our archival page protectors.

The exact date represented by this map, and the date this map was created, are unclear, but it may have been created around 1838. Du Page County, was formed from the western part of Cook County, on February 9, 1839.

This map does not appear in Greenleaf’s 1840 edition of the New Universal Atlas, which still shows the pre-1839 size of Cook County.

It first appeared in the 1842 edition of the New Universal Atlas and shows Cook County, diminished in size from its pre-1839 size.

This map shows Michigan County in the location where Du Page County should be listed. Michigan was a name suggested for the new county, but the name Du Page was chosen instead. Since Michigan is shown as the county name,   the map may have been created at the time Michigan was suggested for the county name (about 1838) but not changed for the 1842 edition of the atlas, three years after Du Page was selected as the final name for the county. The map was still not updated for the 1848 edition of the atlas, nearly nine years after Du Page County was established.

This map is a great resource for genealogical or historical research.   The 11x 14 inch (or slightly larger) map is printed  on 80 pound archival paper and protected by our  archival quality polypropylene  sleeve.    An insert on the back of the map provides brief information about the map and a brief history of the area represented on the map.

This map is reprinted from an original map which we own.
