Thomas Gamaliel Bradford was born in 1802 and died in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1887.

Before venturing into the map publishing business, he had been an assistant editor of the American Encyclopedia.

His first atlas, Atlas Designed to Illustrate the Abridgement of Universal Geography, Modern and Ancient, was published in Boston in.1835 and was an abridgement of a French atlas. Later that year, he also published A Comprehensive Atlas Geographical, Historical and Commercial.

His final atlas, An Illustrated Atlas, Geological, Statistical, and Historical of the United States and Adjacent Countries, was published in 1838. This edition was larger and has become more scarce than his earlier atlas.

This hand colored map was engraved by G. W. Boynton and published in Boston by T. G. Bradford in 1838. It was taken from the scarce large edition of Bradford's An Illustrated Atlas, Geological, Statistical, and Historical of the United States and Adjacent Countries .

The original size of this map was 14" x 11.5" but this reprint was slightly reduced in size to accommodate our archival page protectors.
